Facial trauma is any injury to the tooth, jaw, or face. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are highly qualified to repair facial trauma injuries because they have undergone years of specialty training to understand facial structures and aesthetics.
An oral surgeon can treat many facial trauma injuries, including
- Facial cuts
- Broken or avulsed (knocked-out) teeth
- Fractured facial bones
- Jaw fractures
- Mouth lacerations
Treating Facial Injuries
Facial trauma is an unexpected event that requires immediate treatment. Dr. Brown and his staff at Northlake Oral & Facial Surgery provide compassionate care in any situation. We prioritize your safety and comfort to ensure the best possible outcome.
Your treatment options depend on the severity and location of the trauma. Common treatments include the following:
Facial Cuts
Stitches are commonly used to close an open wound. Your oral surgeon will use the best technique to minimize scarring.
Facial Fractures
Facial fractures cannot heal with traditional casts. Your oral and maxillofacial surgeon stabilizes these bones using plates, screws, and wires. Scarring is minimal because stabilization occurs beneath the skin.
Dental Injuries
A dentist is often able to repair a broken or cracked tooth. However, an oral surgeon can handle more severe cases, such as a tooth that has been avulsed (knocked out) or broken at the socket.
If your tooth has been knocked out, immediately see an oral surgeon — this is considered a dental emergency. The greatest opportunity to save a tooth is within 30 minutes of the injury. Place the tooth in a container of saliva or whole milk and bring it to our office. Do not disinfect or wipe off the tooth. We will do everything we can to save it, although sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. If we are unable to save the tooth, we will discuss replacement options, such as dental implants.
