Partial or complete dentures remain a popular tooth replacement option. By design, dentures fit on top of a bony ridge along the gums. If this ridge is not the right shape or size, dentures can become very uncomfortable to wear. Pre-prosthetic surgery offers a solution to patients who wish to wear dentures but find them uncomfortable.
Dentures should fit snugly and comfortably inside the mouth. You may notice that, over time, the dentures you currently have do not fit as well as they used to. That’s because your mouth can alter in size and shape, but your dentures do not. Poorly fitting dentures can cause issues such as difficulty eating and speaking, pain, and infection. It is important to call your dentist if you are experiencing any discomfort from your dentures.
If you are referred to our office, Dr. Brown will perform a thorough oral evaluation and create a customized treatment plan to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and securely. If you are interested, other tooth replacement options can be discussed at the consultation.
There are several ways to surgically prepare the mouth for a denture. One or more of the following pre-prosthetic procedures may be performed:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping
- Bone ridge reduction
- Removal of excess bone or soft tissue
In general, most pre-prosthetic surgeries are considered minor outpatient procedures. Your oral surgeon will review your specific procedure during the consultation.
